Angles:
When planets are found in the angles of the horoscope (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th Houses) they are said to be angular or "accidentally dignified." When so placed, they exert a greater influence for either good or ill, than when located in the other houses.

The Eastern angle with Aries, where Mars is the ruler, suggests the Sun rising to the material activities of the day. As the Sun, denoting spirit, is under the cross denoting matter, but rising toward it, therefore it denotes the beginning of Life in the material world, and Mars, the ruler, stands for the desire nature, which draws the spirit towards material existence in order that it may conquer matter.

The Southern angle, Capricorn, with Saturn as ruler, suggests the Sun crossing the meridian as it does at noon. It has traversed half its prescribed journey across the heavens, therefore the half-circle is omitted, and the other half-circle is retained under the cross in the symbol of Saturn. Hence Saturn denotes persistence, mechanical ability, etc., and the Tenth House the worldly achievements of the human being.

The Western angle with Libra in the balance where the material activities turn to the spiritual, divides the day from the night; the busy summer from the inactive winter. It turns the waking hours devoted to the active material life, into the night where man contacts the unseen world. Therefore the circle, spirit, is above the cross of matter, the desire nature has been conquered, and the symbol of Mars turned upside down so that it becomes the symbol of Venus, the planet of love which rules this house, and which is therefore also the house of unions, of partnerships, the house that denotes the one nearest and dearest to us.

The Northern angle, with the sign Cancer, marks the time when the Sun is at its lowest point. The sign consists of two suns, with the line of force proceeding from each one, but in opposite directions. The line from the sun which points to the East denotes the direction in which the physical Sun moves. The sun with the line of force going towards the West denotes the path in which the spiritual influences turn after the physical Sun has ceased its activity. This angle, therefore, is the angle of mystery, occultism, and of the dark and unseen side of man's nature; therefore it has for its ruler the orb of night, the Moon.

Ascendant:
The Ascendant is the rising sign in the East at the time of birth. It metaphorically channels our expectations of life. The first impression stays with us throughout the day, influencing each contact and every event. The Ascendant channels all the other energies in the chart actively working to express them. It describes the way we live our natal chart and how we confront our environment, making up an important part of our identity.

see this Houses page or more on the ascendant

Aspects:
The angular distance by which planets are set apart, which determines their influence for good or ill.

The conjunction occurs when two planets are in the same degree of the Zodiac, and the parallel is the position of two planets in the same degree of declination, regardless of whether they are both North or South of the Equator, or whether one is in North and the other in South declination.

These aspects are variable. If between benefics (the Sun, Venus and Jupiter), they are good, or if the planets of variable nature (the Moon and Mercury), are aspected by conjunction or parallel with the benefics it is good, but if the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Jupiter are in conjunction or parallel with one of the malefics (Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune), it is evil ("The Devil's in that conjunction!"); the conjunction of two malefics is more so, but the parallel of two malefics is exceedingly strong in its detrimental influence. Conversely, of course, the parallel between two benefics is extraordinarily fortunate.

Aspect patterns:
It isn't uncommon for horoscopes to contain a series of aspects that form one or more configurations. While it is difficult to state exactly what the result of these compound aspects may be, in a general sense we can speculate. Several configurations formed by major aspects are: the T Square, the Grand Cross, the Grand Trine, the Mystic Rectangle, the Kite, a Stellium, the Yod and the Boomerang.

see more about aspect patterns here and here as well

Cadent:
The third, sixth, ninth and twelfth houses are called cadent, and so are planets placed in these houses. This position weakens the influence of planets, so that benefics are not so helpful and malefics not so harmful when placed in cadent houses.

Chart patterns:
One of the most obvious considerations when looking at a natal figure is the pattern of distribution of the planets (counting the luminaries and Pluto as planets) around the figure. Even without finer analysis of aspects and placements, this holds clues to certain qualities of the energies that the individual will experience.

The bowl chart describes the arrangement of all the planets within one 180º half of the figure (but spanning an arc of more than 120º), which will cover five, six or seven adjacent houses and signs. This implies self-containment of the individual, with some difficulty in self-expression, but the desire to teach others what has been personally learned. The life will be focused most intensively on the areas indicated by the houses occupied, at the expense of the others. This will in some cases emphasise one of the four hemispheres (see houses / angles article page 3). The first planet in the sequence (following the normal anticlockwise ordering of the signs) is known as the 'leading planet' and serves as a leading point on which the individual's attention will be focused.

The bucket chart is the same as the bowl chart except for one planet being in the opposite half of the figure. This odd planet out (sometimes known as a 'singleton') shows, in the context of its sign and house placement, a direction or goal that the individual should and probably uncompromisingly will follow. Depending on whether the singleton is in a personal or social house, the goal will be hidden from or apparent to others.

The bundle chart is the same as the bowl chart but with all the planets within a 120º section of the figure, which will span one, two, three, four or five adjacent houses and signs. It implies the limiting of the personal focus and opportunities to a narrow range of areas of life, making it difficult for the individual to integrate in areas outside these, and leading to inhibition.

The locomotive chart is the same as the bowl chart but with all the planets within a 240º section of the figure (but spanning more than 180º), which will cover seven, eight or nine adjacent houses and signs. It is associated with ambition, drive, energy and perseverance. The leading planet (following the anticlockwise order) shows by its sign and house placement qualities and areas of focus for development in relation to this ambition, which will be publicly revealed if in a social house, but kept private if in a personal house.

The seesaw chart is an arrangement characterised by five pairs of planets in mutual opposition aspect, or at least in opposing houses. This strongly highlights awareness of conflicting perspectives and viewpoints, each with its own validity, so indecision over judgements is a common by-product. It also indicates conflict between personal wishes and outer-world application, along the lines of the themes of the personal and social houses involved in each opposition.

The splash chart features the planets scattered around the figure, so that at least two are on the opposite half of the figure from the majority (so distinguishing from the bucket chart), and there is no 120º portion entirely unoccupied (so distinguishing from the locomotive chart), and without the arrangement of oppositions that characterises the seesaw chart. In all these respects it is identical to the 'splay' chart (below). But its defining characteristic is that no two consecutive houses or signs are empty (unoccupied by a planet). It implies a multiplicity of personal interests, and the scattered application of energies, which when negatively expressed leads to superficiality and dilettantism, but when positively expressed can show a desire for complete learning about all areas of life and the world.

The splay chart is the same as the splash chart with the exception that at least two consecutive houses or signs are unoccupied at at least one point in the figure. Frequently, the planets will be found to be scattered in small groups at irregular intervals around the figure, though sometimes a grand trine can be present. This chart pattern renders the individual highly independent, and resistant to being categorised, criticised, organised or forced into conformity by others. An emphasis on the angular houses will favour public distinction.

Chiron
A planetoid discovered in 1977, believed to have originated from outside our solar system, Chiron travels between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus in a 49 year orbit (7x7). His emblem, the Centaur, represents holistic understanding. Chiron governs healing and relationships, but Chiron profoundly stands for the deep wounds we have brought into this life to be healed and so to enable us to heal others. "Astrologically, Chiron is a knowledge holder who transmits higher teachings either as an outer teacher (Saturn) or as an inner teacher or spirit guide (Uranus).

The position of Chiron's orbit, placed between Saturn and Uranus, is rather special. In spite of all attempts at classification, Chiron has, as it were, taken on the role of a planet. His path is severely eccentric, like that of Pluto, so that he occasionally crosses the orbits of both Saturn and Uranus. Most astrologers regard him as a sort of "mediator" between these two, and as a link between the "Guardian of the Spheres" (Saturn) and the outer planets. Accordingly, Chiron is said to have both a Saturnian and a Uranian influence. Before Chiron was defined as a captured comet, he was regarded as an errant asteroid, far from the "herd", or belt, of the other asteroids between Mars and Jupiter, a loner and rebel, going his own way. The key-shaped glyph shown above has become widely accepted, and is part of the basis for interpretation - Chiron is regarded as a key to the outer planets, as well as to those spheres of life shown by his role in classical mythology.

Embodying the archetype of "the wounded healer", Chiron stresses the importance of going within to find a cura or answer -- and then sharing it with others. In his two primary subjects of education and medicine, Chiron unites the body and mind, instinct and intellect. We see his ancient teachings now emerging through the recent advent of holistic health and education."

Cusp:
The first degree of a house or sign. When the Sun leaves the 30th degree of Cancer and is in Leo 0 degree, 1 min., it is said to be on the cusp, of Leo, the same with respect to the other signs. If Aries 10 degrees is on the midheaven, as the cusp or dividing line between the ninth and tenth houses is called, and Neptune is in Aries 9 degrees 55 minutes, it is placed in the Ninth House on the cusp, of the tenth. If it is in Aries 10 degrees 5 minutes, it is placed in the tenth house on the cusp.

As the influence of planets having direct motion is always forward in the Zodiac, a planet on the cusp of a house will always have a stronger influence on the affairs signified by that house than a planet which is placed in the latter degrees of a house.

Elevation:
A planet placed in or near the 9th or 10th houses is said to be "elevated." The nearer it is to the Midheaven, the more highly elevated it is. A planet in elevation is much more powerful, for either good or ill, than when placed at a lower altitude.

Hemisphere emphasis:
The majority of the planets on the eastern half (The directions are backwards on an astrology chart) MC (Midheaven) to IC, this person runs their own life and hates interference from others. They are independent, self starters and rely upon themselves.

Majority on the western half (IC to MC) indicates a need for others, others have a say, in extreme cases, control in a person's life, or dependence on others for survival (rare).

Majority in the north (bottom half, asc-dec) Personal privacy is important here. This person needs time alone and a sense of security regarding personal things an private life.

Majority in the south (top half) Here we have the outgoing people. Those who don't mind being the center of attention, or before the public. Most are extroverted and enjoy leadership roles.

Houses:
The houses are divisions of the heavens relative to the birthplace, and the signs are divisions of the heavens relative to the vernal equinox. The Zodiac appears to move at the rate of one degree in every four minutes, but the Houses are considered stationary relative to the birthplace.

The birthplace is always considered the highest place on earth. And from that point four imaginary lines are drawn to the four cardinal points, North, East, South and West. Imagine a line drawn from your birthplace to the point directly overhead where the Sun is at noon. That would be directly South, and this line is regarded as the cusp of the 10th House, which for that reason is called the midheaven. If this line is extended through the center of the earth, to the opposite side of the earth and thence into space, that lower part would point North, and form the cusp of the 4th House called the Nadir, which is opposite the 10th.

These two points are invested by the same degrees of the Zodiac, at any given time regardless of whether the birthplace is near the pole or the equator. In the latter case, we may also imagine a line drawn at right angles across the Meridian, (as the line in the horoscope from the Midheaven to the Nadir is called), from East to West, and that would then form the cusps of the 1st and 7th Houses. By dividing each of the four sections into three we would have twelve compartments of equal size, namely thirty degrees each.

But all birthplaces are not on the equator, and owing to the spherical shape of the earth and the inclination of the earth's axis, the sizes of the houses vary more and more as we approach the poles, so that some houses may have only twelve or fifteen degrees, while others have more than sixty.

The reason for this division of the earth into houses may be comprehended when we consider that the Sun's rays affect us differently in the morning, at noon and at night, also in summer and winter; and if we study the cause, we shall readily see that it is the angle at which the ray strikes us or the earth which produces the difference in effect. Similarly with the stellar rays, Astrologers have observed that a child born at or near noon, when the Sun's rays strike the birthplace from the 10th House, has a better chance of advancement in life, other things being equal, than one born after Sundown, for the latter generally remains a servant. Therefore they say that the 10th House determines social position and honor, but the 6th House, which is just below the Western horizon rules service and employment. By similar observations and tabulations it has been found that the other planetary rays affect the various departments of life when their ray is projected through the other houses, and therefore each house is said to 'rule' certain things.

Hyleg:
A term used by ancient Arabian Astrologers to designate the points in the horoscope which are the principal foci of vitality and healthy, namely the Sun, Moon and Ascendant.

It needs but little argument to show that the great and glorious reservoir of life which we call the Sun is an important factor in the matter of health, and that the lesser Light, the Moon, has dominion in this respect, for she collects and reflects the solar ray. And it is a matter of common knowledge that she is in some way connected with gestation, and parturition, therefore, the Moon is the particular significator of health in a woman's horoscope while the Sun has the strongest influence in a man's figure. Both are important however, for if, in a man's figure, Saturn is square to the Moon he will feel it, but if this configuration happens in a woman's horoscope, she will feel it more; and conversely, Saturn square to the Sun in a woman's horoscope will affect her health, but not in the same degree as it will that of a man when occurring in his figure.

The reason why the Ascendant is designated as a factor in health and vitality is not so apparent upon the surface, but when we realize that the ascendant at birth is the Moon's place at conception,* the reason is obvious, for the Moon is the planet of fecundation, the focus and reflector of the solar Life-forces, and if, at the time of conception, when the human seed-atom was planted, she was in a weak sign like Virgo, there is a fundamental lack of energy and vitality at the very start of life, and a consequent lassitude which affects through all the years of its existence, the body then beginning to germinate.

(* Does that just apply to full-term births?)

Thus, to sum up, the Sun, Moon and Ascendant are all important significators of health and vitality for both sexes, but the position and aspects of the Moon are more important to a woman than those of the Sun and Ascendant, and the position and aspects of the Sun are more vital to the health of a man than the two other factors.

In modern times the word 'Hyleg,' and the designation of the vital parts of the horoscope as 'hylegiacal' places are not generally used. The writer always speaks of them as 'significance of health,' then everybody understands what is meant, and it seems senseless to befog the subject with mysterious terms when good, plain English conveys our meaning so much better. It should also be understood that to judge any subject, be it health, wealth, joy or sorrow or any other thing that may befall, the special significators give only a limited amount of information. To obtain a really comprehensive knowledge each subject must be judged from the horoscope as a whole.

Interception:
In the article on 'Houses,' it is stated that owing to the spherical shape of the earth and the inclination of the earth's axis, some of the mundane houses in the higher Northern latitudes are only twelve or fifteen degrees, while others are forty, fifty, or sixty degrees long. But the signs of the Zodiac are only thirty degrees, and it therefore follows that in cases where a mundane house is very long, one or even two whole signs may be included within its cusps. When a sign is intercepted in a house, the opposite sign is also intercepted in the opposite house; consequently we find Cancer intercepted in the eighth house with Neptune in it.

Regarding the influence of interception, we find that when a planet is in an intercepted sign its influence is held in abeyance or latency until by progression it moves out of the intercepted sign. This tendency may be somewhat modified by a strong aspect, or a number of minor or weak ones, but an intercepted planet never has the same power over the life as one that is free.

Lilith:
The glyph used for
Lilith is a black Moon, as opposed to that used for the real Moon. Lilith is included in the chart drawing Type 2.AC; some other drawing types, such as 2.AT show Lilith in the table of planetary positions.

Lilith's position tells us about unfulfilled wishes, the suppressed shadow-side of our personality, painful experiences, privation and darkness. As with Pluto, the processes triggered here should lead to self-recognition and the acceptance of our dark side. Good and bad should not be differentiated from each other, but human existence should be seen as many-faceted.

In 1918 astrologers spoke of a second moon near the earth called the dark moon (>Black moon Lilith is really a point in the moon's orbit, not a body in the sky). Understanding and finding Lilith's position in your natal chart is very important. It can help you become aware of your "dark side" and bring self defeating patterns and unhealthy behavior to light. This is what I call your "sensitive point."

In a woman's horoscope, Lilith represents which part of life the woman plays a strong role in. Lilith is very evident and dominant in charts of powerful, creative women; Those who are quite successful yet vulnerable and sensitive. Many have unconventional relationships. In a man's horoscope, Lilith can reveal what type of woman he fears most and which type of woman can drive him to despair.

see Lilith page

Medium Coeli/Midheaven:
The Medium Coeli also called MC or
Midheaven refers to the highest point on the chart. It is the point of culmination where the planets reach the point on their apparent orbits highest above the horizon. The position of the MC on your chart can reveal how you conduct yourself in the outside world. This includes your role in public, your professional career, and your social position and in some cases your rate of success. The MC describes your professional orientation, where your talents lie and how you go about planning your career. There is also information about the relevance of other people's opinions and tells if you are persistent and/or determined.

When an astrologer offers career guidance to someone, the Midheaven is certainly not the only factor to be taken into consideration. We cannot look at a Midheaven sign and say "Oh yes, you need to go and become an accountant"! Looking at the Midheaven sign does give us an indication of the type of career the individual would *like* to have - although whether this is possible/practical would need to be assessed through a careful look at the rest of the natal chart in detail.

Aries Midheaven: Requires freedom in a career, would not be well suited to strict routine. Noisy, dirty or dangerous environments are not a problem for this person. Strong spirit of enterprise means that this is a good placement for self-employment, although foolish impulsive risks may be taken. Typical career routes include electronics, mechanics, the armed forces, fitness instruction, engineering, self-employment in the IT industry.

Taurus Midheaven: Needs some kind of steady career path in order to function best. Irregular income is frightening. Open air careers appeal. Typical career routes include sports, horticulture or agriculture, financial management, food industry, accountancy, building, banking, singing, physiotherapy.

Gemini Midheaven: Communication is the key to a fulfilling career, but these people need a lot of variety and stimulation. Not overly ambitious. Typical career routes include sales, the media, writing, advertising, retailing, youth work, the hotel industry, interpreting/translation, teaching.

Cancer Midheaven: Requires some continuity in career, as there is a dislike of change. Shrewd business sense is either present or aspired to, but money is not the principle motivation in career. Typical career routes include nursing and the 'caring' professions, social work, restaurant trade, historian, architecture, child care industry.

Leo Midheaven: Likes to be the centre of attention in their career, but will not tolerate difficult conditions. Ambitious and financially motivated, although much happier when they have an emotional attachment to work too. Typical career routes include acting, performing, any artistic work, luxury trades, banking, fashion industry, medical profession, politics or local government, work with animals.

Virgo Midheaven: Tends to hide light behind a bushel. Work best as an 'assistant' rather than a 'leader', although will often be the real power behind a throne. Typical career routes include secretarial/personal assistant work, literary/publishing industry, administration or management of any kind, health club/leisure centre management, journalism, copywriting, psychology, the police, librarian, civil servant.

Libra Midheaven: Comfortable working conditions are a must, and this position is motivated by money. Peacemaker of the office. Typical career routes include the fashion and beauty industry, soft furnishing or interior design, antiques, diplomatic corps, the legal profession, language work, modelling.

Scorpio Midheaven: Of all signs, this position most requires emotional involvement in the career. Money motivation just won't do. Needs career security. Typical career routes include the armed forces, police, detective or forensic science work, investigative journalism, mining, self employment, research of any kind, medical profession, funeral industry, psychotherapist.

Sagittarius Midheaven: Needs to be challenged, not very good with routine. Not particularly money motivated, but is ambitious. Difficult working conditions usually no problem. Typical career routes include the legal profession, outdoor sports, veterinary profession, travel industry, export industry, university lecturer, town planning, space industry, airline industry, the church.

Capricorn Midheaven: Very ambitious for status, rather than necessarily for money. Quintessential self-made businessman. Typical career routes include self employment, politics, estate agency, farming, orthopaedics, homeopathy, engineering, exploration industry, dentistry, sculpting, civil service, stock broking.

Aquarius Midheaven: Need absolute freedom in their career, and need, above all, to be able to be innovative. Not particularly motivated by money. Typical career routes include cutting edge technology, space industry, airline industry, IT industry, optician, conservation, television work, photography, humanitarian work, publishing, the legal profession, telecommunications.

Pisces Midheaven: Often to be found working tirelessly in the background. Exceptional counselling abilities. Needs variety. Typical career routes include the caring professions (particularly the most emotionally demanding ones), work with the disadvantaged, the music industry, anything artistic, the wine trade, the sea or fishing industries, plumbing, the church, poet or author, the navy.

so much more to be said about the midheaven

Moon's Nodes:
In astrology, the
Moon's Nodes are not planets in the strict astronomical sense, but rather sensitive points on the ecliptic, where the Moon crosses from north to south latitude and vice versa. The body of the "energy dragon" is the fourth-dimensional path of the Moon by declination, as she weaves her web around the earth.

The nodes are commonly known as the Dragon's Head (Caput Draconis in Latin), the North Node, and Dragon's Tail (Cauda Draconis), the South Node, although in Indian Astrology they are known as Rahu and Ketu. The Dragon's Head, a "shadow planet" exalted in Gemini, is considered benefic (good), whilst the Dragon's Tail, exalted in Sagittarius, is considered malefic (evil) in influence. Their motion is normally retrograde at the rate of roughly one degree every 19 days (compare the 19 year cycle of lunation); periods of direct motion are therefore considered unfortunate.

The placement of the Nodes is important, because it illustrates a relationship between the Moon, the Earth and the Sun (eclipses can be calculated by the movement of the nodal axis). The significance of the Nodes has been widely underestimated in Western Astrology over the past fifty years or so, due to some extent to the rise of "psychological" or "humanistic" interpretative paradigms that have devalued many traditional features of the astrologer's toolkit. However, traditional Western astrology along with Vedic, or Indian astrology, places the Nodes on the same critical level of importance as the Sun, Moon and other visible planets. There is no doubt that this elevation of the Nodes to planetary status is justified, for experience shows that the movement of the Nodes has a very significant effect on human life and on the destinies of all beings who dwell on the surface of the Earth.

The Dragon's Head (North Node):
Aspects to the North Node concern or affect relationships to prevailing trends, attitudes and opportunities. The Dragon's Head represents your karmic objectives in this lifetime. It points the way towards soul growth and evolution. The sign holding your Dragon's Head reveals the flavour of your karma in this lifetime, while its house placement shows the area of life in which you need to develop, or become conscious of this karma. Positive aspects to the Dragon's Head are generally favourable from the benefics (Venus and Jupiter), Sun, Moon and Mercury, whilst sextile or trine from Mars, Uranus, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto also have beneficial effects. Square and opposition from the benefics and conjunction, square and opposition from the malefics are unfortunate, according to the matters signified by house and planet afflicted.

The Dragon's Tail (South Node):
Aspects to the Dragon's Tail display the results of innate unconscious tendencies and karmic patterns as they emerge in the life. They tend to be separative and destructive. Any aspect to the South Node from any planet is unfortunate for matters to do with the house and planet activated thereby. Past life hangovers are represented by the position and aspects of the Dragon's Tail. The position of the Dragon's Tail is generally indicative of past life connections or commitments in a relationship analysis. Aspects thereto are also most interesting, especially if a pre-natal eclipse falls there, either natally or in conjunction with a progression or major transit.

The best way to understand the astrological nature of the Nodes might be to envisage them as bubbling pools of karmic energy. These have a massive potency, which is associated with powerful events and feelings whenever they are activated by progressions or transits. Because the nodes are pools of karma associated primarily with the house in which they are located, the related effects are deep and often seem almost inevitable. It is not for nothing that they are called the Dragon's Head and Tail.

Summary of placements of the Dragon's Head and Tail

Part of Fortune:
The Part of Fortune is derived from The Sun as the symbol of identity and ambition, the Moon for its emotionality and its conscious and subconscious reactions, and finally the Ascendant as the visible personality, which expresses the energies of the Sun and the Moon. The position in the horoscope where Sun, Moon and Ascendant are most harmoniously working together is called the Part of Fortune. The energies of a sign and the affairs of the astrological house concerned will show you how to reach a state of true happiness.

The Part of Fortune is calculated by adding the Moon's zodiac degree to that of the ascendant and subtracting the degree of the Sun. Absolute longitude is used, which translates 0 Aries to zero degrees and 29 Pisces as 359 degrees, (18 degrees Taurus = 48 degrees: the 30 degrees of Aries + 18 of Taurus).

Therefore, if the ascendant is at 15 Cancer, the Moon at 6 Aquarius, and the Sun at 10 Leo:

Ascendant = 105
Moon = 306
Sun = 130
Ascendant + Moon - Sun = 105 + 306 - 130 = 281
This corresponds to 11 Capricorn

If the sum is greater than 360, then subtract 360 in order to return from absolute longitude to zodiac degree.

In nocturnal charts, ie., where the Sun is below the horizon, the formula for calculating the Part of Fortune is reversed to: Ascendant + Sun - Moon.

Since the Part of Fortune is a zodiacal point, it can be said to be aspected by planets, but it does not make aspects itself.

Occidental/Oriental:
Planets in the twelfth, eleventh, tenth, sixth, fifth, and fourth houses are called oriental or eastern, and the planets in the other six houses are called occidental or western.

Orb:
Planets form aspects which influence human affairs when they are in the same degree of the Zodiac, or a certain number of degrees apart. But it has been found that the influence is felt even when planets are not exactly the required number of degrees apart. Thus a planet has a subtle sphere which makes it effective before an exact aspect is formed, and after it has been dissolved, and this is called its orb.

Parallel:
The aspect formed between two planets when they are in the same degree of declination, either North or South of the celestial equator.

Reception:
Planets are in 'mutual reception' when each occupies the house ruled by the other; as Venus in Aries and Mars in Taurus. The effect depends on the agreement between the natures of the planets. When Mars is in the Mercurial signs Gemini or Virgo and Mercury in the Martial signs Aries or Scorpio, the dynamic energy of Mars is infused into the mental organization of that person who on that account becomes more alert mentally. Whether this alertness manifests erratically or along orderly lines depends upon the aspects of course; all the 'mutual reception' does is to give the energy.

Succedent Houses:
The second, fifth, eighth and eleventh houses are called succedent, because the 'succeed' or follow the 'Angles.'

Transits:
At the moment a child is born the positions of the planets show the tendencies of the life. Those positions constitute the 'Radix,' and anything that has reference to that 'Root' of all events is called 'radical.' Thus, 'the radical Jupiter' refers to the position of Jupiter at a certain person's birth.

During the next twenty, thirty or sixty days after birth the planets move on and make certain aspects to the positions held by them at birth. Each of these days corresponds to a year of life, and the aspects formed by the 'progression' on the twentieth day after birth will operate to bring about events in the twentieth year. The aspects formed on the thirty-fifth day after birth will determine the influences in the thirty-fifth year and so on. These are called 'progressed' positions and aspects. Thus, if someone says "My progressed Sun will be trine to my radical Jupiter when I am forty," he means that forty days after his birth the Sun had progressed to a trine aspect with the position of Jupiter at his birth, and that therefore this will operate in his fortieth year to bring about events of a fortunate nature, because the aspect and the planets are what is called good.

As the span of life is usually not more than seventy years, the planetary positions after seventy days from birth do not have as marked an effect as described in the foregoing paragraph, but they have nevertheless an appreciable influence on the lives of mankind, according to their natures. But because of the rapid transit made, the effects are ephemeral, even in the case of the slower planets. These movements of the planets are called 'transits.'

They are found in the ephemeris for the current year. That is to say, if you want to know what planets transit the different houses of your horoscope in 1916, you can find them only in the ephemeris for that year. The 'radical' and 'progressed' planets are all in the ephemeris for the year you were born, but the 'transits' for 1920, for instance, can only be found in the ephemeris for 1920.

Lunations, or New Moons, and eclipses are among the most important transits. Their effect is described under 'lunations,' which see. Next in importance are the transits of the superior planets through the houses. The tenth house signifies social honor. When Jupiter transits it every twelfth year, there will be opportunities for social advancement; when Saturn comes there once in thirty years, look out for setbacks and exert your will to overcome them; and you may judge in like manner about the other planets and houses.
